British Royal Air Force members display photos of the original 76 escapes of the Great Escape from Stalag Luft III during a commemoration event at the prisoner of war museum in Zagan, Poland, March 24, 2024. Called the “act of remembrance,” the airmen marched before the attendees with the prisoners’ photos while their names were recited, followed by a firing of volleys by Polish military members, a playing of “Last Post, by a British Royal Air Force trumpet player, and then a moment of silence by all in attendance. Attendees witnessed the commemoration of the airmen’s daring escape through Tunnel Harry and the deaths of those prisoners that were recaptured by the Nazi forces. Of the 76 that managed to escape before the effort was discovered by the guards, only three ultimately made it to allied territory, with the rest recaptured and 50 of those murdered by the order of Adolph Hitler.
