A new sign near the front gate at the Iowa Air National Guard on June 1, 1961 with a mushroom cloud denoting the unit’s nuclear capable mission when the 174th Tactical Fighter Squadron began flying F-100 Super Sabre aircraft. Within the next 12 months the Squadron was further expanded when they became a Fighter Group, doubling their authorized manning to over 800 assigned airmen. 174h TFS photo
