The first formation in the main hangar as the 185th Tactical Fighter Group at the Iowa Air National Guard in Sioux City, Iowa on October 13, 1962 as part of a federal inspection, shortly after 185th Tactical Fighter Group’s 1 October 1962 federal recognition. The inspection was part of the Iowa Air Guard’s 185th TFG being federally recognized in Sioux City where the 174th Tactical Fighter Squadron had been in operation since the end of the 2nd World War. The creation of the 185th TFG grew the unit to over 800 airmen, doubling the size of the Iowa ANG unit. 185th TFG photo
