U.S. Army Sgt. Jesse Untalan, a video broadcaster and California native, U.S. Pacific Army Command, stands proudly in front of the Capas National Shrine, while participating in military exercise Balikatan 2013. BK13 is an annual military bilateral exercise in the Philippines focused on interoperability between the Armed Forces of the Philippines and U.S. in build military-to-military relations and cooperation. Untalan identified his great-grandfather's name, Pedro Untalan, a Bataan death march survivor, who served in the U.S. Army, and among the tens of thousands of men and women honored on the memorial's walls. They endured inhuman conditions at the prison camp in Capas, Tarlac, and during the infamous Death March. An estimated 60,600 Filipinos and 9,900 Americans painstakingly marched from April 9-15, 1942. (U.S. Air Force photo/Tech. Sgt. Jerome S. Tayborn)
