Capas National Shrine was erected to show reverence to those World War II soldiers who were a part of the Bataan death march and to stand as a public awareness and education in the Tarlac province. The memorial features a needle-like tower consisting of three sections symbolizing the Filipino, American and Japanese people. The "obelisk" is the focal center of the entire shrine site which stands for peace. A regulatory signal atop the structure beacons, symbolizing the height of nationalistic aspiration of Filipinos towards peace and freedom. An estimated 60,600 Filipinos and 9,900 Americans who marched from April 9-15, 1942 and the tens of thousands of prisoners of war who occupied nearby Camp O'Donnell and locations throughout Tarlac Province.
