Retired Gunnery Sgt. Chuck Carter, the oldest Marine of the evening, eats a piece of the ceremonial cake as part of the 11th Marine Expeditionary Unit's Marine Corps Ball ceremony here Nov. 9. Every year, Marines all around the world host a Marine Corps Ball celebrating the day the Marine Corps was first established. It is tradition during the ceremony that the oldest Marine of the evening eats a piece of birthday cake and then passes the slice to the youngest Marine of the evening to eat. This gesture symbolizes the passing of history and traditions from one generation to the next.
