Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island

Staff Sgt. Kevin Kurlas, senior drill instructor for Platoon 1028, Delta Company, 1st Recruit Training Battalion, motivates his recruits to move quickly as they spread out on the battalion’s physical training field during their first martial arts session Feb. 11, 2014, on Parris Island, S.C. During this session, recruits learned standard procedures and the proper basic fighting stance. The Marine Corps Martial Arts Program fuses hand-to-hand combat skills with character development, yielding a strong, mentally sound Marine warrior. Kurlas, 37, is from Columbus, Ohio. Delta Company is scheduled to graduate May 2, 2014. (Photo by Cpl. Octavia Davis)
