Capt. Melanie Bowman, Forward Surgery Team commander, 61st medical detachment, 86th Combat support hospital, performs a dead-lift during a functional fitness competition, in honor of the holidays and Army spirit, held at Roberts International Airport, Monrovia, Liberia, Dec. 24, 2014. The functional fitness challenge included a series of physical exercises, which competitors from various units needed to complete in less than 20 minutes. Some of those exercises included lateral bar burpees, deadlifts of 225 pounds for male competitors and 135 pounds for females, a 200-meter run, and box jumps. This was just one of many events held across the JFC-UA area of operations that provided service members a unique opportunity to celebrate the holiday season. Operation United Assistance is a Department of Defense operation in Liberia to provide logistics, training and engineering support to U.S. Agency for International Development-led efforts to contain the Ebola virus outbreak in western Africa.
