A stairwell serves as an entrance to an underground tunnel March 20 on Iwo To, Japan. The tunnels were used by the Japanese Imperial forces during the Battle of Iwo Jima to have an edge on the U.S. troops by hiding inside them. There are still remnants of the battle being preserved in these tunnels today, 71 years after the battle. The tunnel passages were often too small to walk upright in and required people to crawl. There are many areas of the tunnels that are too dangerous to explore because of cave-ins and unexploded ordnance. (Marine Corps Photo by Cpl. Douglas D. Simons/Released)
