A sulfur pit fills the air with its stench March 20 on Iwo To, Japan. There are dozens of sulfur pits across the island that serve as constant reminders of the active volcano that lies beneath. The volcano forms land under the island, raising the entire island about six feet per year. Many remnants from World War II are still visible, such as shipwrecks on the coast of the island.
