FORT HOOD, Texas — Soldiers of the 510th Route Clearance Platoon, 20th Engineer Battalion, 36th Engineer Brigade employ their robot to place a demolition charge on a simulated mine during a Route Clearance training mission in support of the Medium Mine Protected Vehicle Type II (MMPV II) operational test here. Utilizing the robot to reduce explosive hazards provides stand-off and safety to the Route Clearance Soldiers. Additional enabler systems, such as the Vehicle Optics Sensor System (VOSS), provide greater observation and coordination capability to the Soldiers remotely employing the robot. “Eyes-On” doesn’t require direct line of sight any more. . Along with the U.S. Army Operational Test Command, the Soldiers conduct realistic, unit specific missions, Soldier consideration and comments on the system are incorporated into test data to be used in both system evaluation and refinement.
