Uruguayan Soldiers assigned to MINUSTAH were thanked for their assistance in the Medical Readiness Training Exercise by speakers at the closing ceremony, May 20. The exercise was held at the American University of the Caribbean for 10 days. Doctors, dentists and optometrists assisted more than 4,100 patients from the Les Cayes area. Local Haitian doctors, Haitian Coast Guard members and U.S. Navy service members with the Operational Health Support Unit also assisted in the MEDRETE. Les Cayes is the second MEDRETE to be conducted in the southern region of Haiti. The first was in Port Salut several weeks ago. The MEDRETEs are an example of what Haitians may expect with the New Horizon projects, scheduled to begin in June.
