Children from a local school in Les Cayes performs a dance at the closing ceremony of the Medical Readiness Training Exercise, May 20. The MEDRETE was conducted over a period of 10 days at the American University of the Caribbean. More than 40 Navy service members, several Haitian doctors, Uruguayan Soldiers assigned to MINUSTAH and Haitian Coast Guard members provided more than 4,100 patients with basic, immediate health care. Haitians were provided care by doctors, dentists and optometrists. Les Cayes is the second MEDRETE to be conducted in the southern region of Haiti. The first was in Port Salut several weeks ago. Both exercises are examples of what may be expected from the New Horizon projects, which are scheduled to begin in June.
