Col. Raul G. Passarino, commander of the Uruguayan Soldiers assigned to MINUSTAH, was presented with an award during the closing ceremony, May 20, by Cmdr. Rhonda McLain, MEDRETE officer in charge, Operational Health Support Unit and David Lindwall, deputy chief of the mission, for the Uruguayan?s assistance in the Medical Readiness Training Exercise. More than 4,100 Haitians in the Les Cayes community received immediate, basic health care from more than 40 Navy service members, several Haitian doctors, Uruguayan Soldiers assigned to MINUSTAH and Haitian Coast Guard members. The MEDRETE was conducted at the American University of the Caribbean for 10 days. Patients were seen by doctors, dentists and optometrists. Les Cayes is the second MEDRETE to be conducted in the southern region of Haiti. The first was in Port Salut several weeks ago. The MEDRETEs are an example of what Haitians may expect with the New Horizon projects, scheduled to begin in June.
