Capt. Joan Olson, nurse, Operational Health Support Unit, addresses the U.S. service members, Haitians and government officials at the American University of the Caribbean during the closing ceremony of the Medical Readiness Training Exercise, May 20. Patients were seen by doctors, dentists and optometrists. The MEDRETE provided more than 4,100 patients in the Les Cayes area with basic, immediate health care over 10 days. Assisting in the exercise were Navy service members, Haitian doctors, Uruguayan Soldiers assigned to MINUSTAH and Haitian Coast Guard members. This was the second MEDRETE conducted in the southern region of Haiti. The exercises are leading up to the beginning of the New Horizon projects, scheduled to begin in June.
