Due to the height restrictions on the C-130 Aircraft from the 41st Airlift Squadron, 19th Airlift Wing, Little Rock Air Force Base, the crew of this High Mobility Artillery Rocket System from the Colorado Army National Guard’s 3rd Battalion, 157th Field Artillery use the Central Tire Inflation System to deflate the tires to reduce the vehicle’s overall height by four to six inches. Despite this measure, the vehicle fit on the aircraft with a few inches to spare for its flight from the Colorado Springs, Colo., airport to Fort Carson.
In support of exercise War Horse Strike, this joint mission between 3-157th FA and the 19th Airlift Wing, 41st Airlift Squadron, from Little Rock Air Force Base, not only helped meet the battalion’s requirement to airlift their HIMARS and conduct “hot panel” training in field conditions, but gave the C-130 crew experience with this type of cargo under flying conditions similar to those in Afghanistan while operating out of unimproved runway surfaces.
