U.S. Marine Lance Cpl. Michael Weber, 20, sights the target with a portable lightweight designator rangefinder during the U.S. and Australian combined joint live fire exercise at Townshend Island during Talisman Sabre 2011. Weber is a forward observer with Battalion Landing Team 2nd Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit, based in Okinawa, Japan. The combined joint live fire exercise held on Townshend Island in the Shoalwater Bay Training Area provided both Australian and U.S. JTAC's the opportunity to guide fire support from U.S. FA-18 and Australian FA-18 Super Hornets, Tiger Armed Reconnaissance Helicopters and Australian and U.S. ships. Talisman Sabre 2011 is a U.S.-led, Australian-supported bilateral exercise aimed at training U.S. and Australian forces in planning and conducting combined operations and improving U.S.-Australian interoperability.
