Australian army Bombardier Mark Staples, from Joint Terminal Attack Control Troop, 1st Ground Liaison Group, pauses a moment during a combined joint live fire exercise at Townshend Island July 14, 2011, during Talisman Sabre 2011. During TS11 on Townshend Island in the Shoalwater Bay Training Area U.S. and Australian Defence Force troops conducted a combined joint live fire exercise, which culminated in the execution of a fully integrated live fire drill. Direct fire power from U.S. FA-18 and Australian FA-18 Super Hornets, Tiger Armed Reconnaissance Helicopters, U.S. Marine 81mm Mortar Platoon, Weapons Company, BLT 2/7, and ships from the Australian and U.S. Navy participated in the exercise as well as joint tactical attack controllers who coordinated the fire power for the day and night serials. Talisman Sabre 2011 is a U.S.-led, Australian-supported bilateral exercise that is aimed at training U.S. and Australian forces in planning and conducting combined operations and improving U.S.-Australian interoperability.
