Lance Cpl. Mark Damico, a maintenance management specialist with Headquarters and Support Company, Battalion Landing Team, 2nd Battalion, 5th Marines, performs a backward role to warm-up before starting Marine Corps Martial Arts Program training inside the hangar bay aboard the amphibious assault ship USS Wasp (LHD 1), underway in the Pacific Ocean, Sept. 6, 2018. Damico, a native of Macomb, Michigan, graduated from Dakota High School in May 2016 before enlisting in December the same year. MCMAP is a hand-to-hand defense program that all Marines learn during their career – Marines, and Sailors assigned to Marine Corps units, earn different colored belts to denote proficiency with martial arts. BLT 2/5 is the 31st Marine Expeditionary Unit’s Ground Combat Element. The 31st MEU, the Marine Corps’ only continuously forward-deployed MEU, provides a flexible force ready to perform a wide-range of military operations across the Indo-Pacific region.
