A large-scale simulated disaster site, which included crushed buildings, overturned vehicles, a four-story tower and confined spaces below the surface, was designed to be as realistic as possible by Oklahoma City firefighters for the 2011 Arizona Vigilant Guard exercise Nov. 4, in Phoenix. More than 500 California National Guard soldiers and airmen assisted in the statewide exercise, which included 250 agencies and prepared both the 49th Military Police Brigade to assume the role as the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Region IX military disaster coordinator, or Homeland Response Force asset and Arizona’s plans for responding to a large-scale disaster.
