A combat engineer from the 235th Engineer Company, 579th Engineer Battalion, 49th Military Police Brigade, California Army National Guard, works with Phoenix firefighters to dislodge a large piece of debris from on top of a simulated victim during the 2011 Arizona Vigilant Guard Exercise Nov. 4, in Phoenix. More than 500 California National Guard soldiers and airmen assisted in the statewide exercise, which included 250 agencies and prepared both the 49th Military Police Brigade to assume the role as the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Region IX military disaster coordinator, or Homeland Response Force asset and Arizona’s plans for responding to a large-scale disaster.
