Angelina Perez of Fresno, Calif., a medic with the 144th Fighter Wing, California Air National Guard, assesses a simulated disaster victim during the 2011 Arizona Vigilant Guard Exercise Nov. 4, in Phoenix. As part of the Search and Rescue team, Perez assisted in the initial reconnaissance of the disaster site by locating and assessing victims. More than 500 California National Guard soldiers and airmen assisted in the statewide exercise, which included 250 agencies and prepared both the 49th Military Police Brigade to assume the role as the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Region IX military disaster coordinator, or Homeland Response Force asset and Arizona’s plans for responding to a large-scale disaster.
