Two members of the search and extraction team with the 235th Engineer Company, 579th Engineer Battalion, 49th Military Police Brigade, California Army National Guard, tend to a simulated victim during the 2011 Arizona Vigilant Guard Exercise Nov. 4, in Phoenix. Around 60 engineers based out of the Santa Rosa headquarters acted as the search and extraction team, which conducted reconnaissance and facilitated entry and rescue among the rubble. The exercise is designed to enhance the California National Guard’s disaster response capabilities. Vigilant Guard is preparing the 49th Military Police Brigade to assume the role as the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Region IX military disaster coordinator, or Homeland Response Force asset.
