Q: What is your name and what do you do in the Coast Guard?
A: Thomas Avery Adkins. I’m an Aviation Electrical Technician currently assigned to C130H Stan team. I’m qualified as a C130H Navigator and Tactical System Operator and serve as an aircrew Instructor/Examiner. As a maintainer, I am able to troubleshoot and repair any electrical or avionics issues that may occur on my designated airframe. As a flight crew Instructor/Examiner, I conduct training and evaluations for my flight crew positions and am able to carry out missions as a qualified aircrew member.
Q: Describe diversity in a word or two and explain what it means to you.
A: Diversity, to me, would be best described as a variety in perspectives. Diversity comes in many different forms such as race, religion, gender, and just plain old personal experience. Since no two persons share the same personal experiences, perspectives vary. Having a work force able to dissect various situations through a variety of perspectives allows for more options (or open doors) for solution.
Q: How has your experience and background prepared you to be effective at your job?
A: As an aircrew instructor, I feel that being a minority has allowed me to, at times, connect to individuals with similar backgrounds and break through some cultural barriers to get information and training accomplished effectively. My background has allowed me to relate to individuals who may have shared some cultural similarities giving us a common ground bringing strangers closer together strengthening a team environment.
Q: Tell me a little bit about your life outside of work.
A: At home, I a am a husband to a Hispanic/American wife with three children. Our household is the image of diversity and a melting pot for several different cultures. We enjoy a wide range of activities as any other family does, but especially enjoy getting out of our comfort zone by traveling and experiencing other cultures. I feel that exposing them to different cultures broadens their perspectives giving them a humbling and at the same time, inspiring vision for their own personal growth.
