Q: What is your name and what do you do in the Coast Guard?
A: YNCM Trisha N. Naftal, Command Master Chief at Sector St. Petersburg.
Q: Describe diversity in a word or two and explain what it means to you.
A: Cohesion: All team members of all different backgrounds coming together to
bring their unique experiences, backgrounds and perspectives to the table,
thereby giving a 360 degree view of what it takes to run an organization
suitable for everyone.
Q: How has your experience and background prepared you to be effective at
your job?
A: I have had many different supervisors and not one of them were
the same. I believe that I've learned something from each of them - I've
learned what not to do from some and what works well for others. I've
worked for some folks that had a "one size fits all" mentality, meaning that
they didn't change their approach depending on who they were working with -
everyone got the same approach. Good leaders know and appreciate that we
aren't all the same and some techniques and approaches will work for some,
but not for others. I've been able to develop different approaches
depending on the folks that I'm working with. As the Command Master Chief,
it is not only important, but crucial to know that everyone is different and
you have to know those differences. Everyone has something to bring to the
table, know how to bring that something out.
Q: Tell me a little bit about your life outside of work.
A: I've been married for nearly 18 years and have a 16 year old son and an 11 year old daughter. Life outside of work primarily consists of fishing and spending time in Naples, FL where we own our retirement home and will eventually settle down.
