"I am Sgt. Joshua Salas, I’m originally from El Paso Texas, I work for USAA and I’m a mechanical engineering student for University of Texas- San Antonio.
I’ve been in the national guard for eight years. I’m part of the 162nd MCAS (Medical Company Area Support) We are one of the main companies providing medical support.
Initially it was optional to come to this mission, I was wanting to hold off on volunteering because of school. I wanted to finish the semester, but then we got to the point where it was no longer voluntary. I wanted to come to this mission but after school was done. I ended up coming anyway so I had to drop my classes. Luckily my professors were understanding.
I was here during Harvey which was great to see like all the support and everyone coming together and helping the community out and this felt like the same mission. We are making sure that everyone has access to get tested.
This mission has added a level of stress to my future but I think it is for a great reason, I think it is meaningful.
There is an issue where a lot of the 68 Whiskeys (combat medics) are in the medical field on their civilian side. That just makes it a lot more difficult to pull them from their original job because they are already on the front lines. So that just leaves us the 68 Whiskeys that are up to date and capable of doing it but just don’t do it as our primary source of income. (U.S. Army Photo by Capt. Leyda Ocasio-Kanzler)"
