211014-N-EV253-1023 SAN DIEGO (Oct. 14, 2021) – Aviation Structural Mechanic Airman Keller Curry, from Wasilla, Alaska, and assigned to the “Raptors” of Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 71, stands by with classmates before participating in a graded evolution for the Landing Signalman Enlisted (LSE) course at Naval Outlying Landing Field in Imperial Beach, California, Oct. 14. During the evolution, the Sailors, who were led by a team of instructors assigned to the “Merlins” of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 3, the course curriculum model manager, learned proper hand signaling techniques used to communicate with helicopter pilots and other ground personnel during flight deck operations such as basic approach and vertical replenishment. HSC-3, stationed on Naval Air Station, North Island in Coronado, California, operates the MH-60S Knighthawk helicopter, and trains all Pacific Fleet Helicopter Control Officers (HCOs) and LSEs.
