211014-N-EV253-2018 SAN DIEGO (Oct. 14, 2021) – Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Handler) 1st Class Brandi Fleming (left), from Rancho Cucamonga, and assigned to the “Merlins” of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 3 as an instructor for the Landing Signalman Enlisted (LSE) course, and a student (right) prepare to approach an aircraft while another student (center) signals to the pilot of an MH-60S Knighthawk helicopter, assigned to the “Chargers” of HSC-14, to “move forward” during a graded evolution as part of the LSE certification process at Naval Outlying Landing Field in Imperial Beach, California, Oct. 14. During the evolution, HSC-3 instructors guided LSE students in implementing proper hand signaling techniques and protocol used to communicate with helicopter pilots and other ground personnel during flight deck operations such as basic approach and vertical replenishment.
