211014-N-EV253-2137 SAN DIEGO (Oct. 14, 2021) – Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Handler) 1st Class Melchor Valladares (left), from Lynwood, California and assigned to the “Merlins” of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 3 as an instructor for the Landing Signalman Enlisted (LSE) course, supervises a student who signals to the pilot of an MH-60S Knighthawk helicopter, assigned to the “Chargers” of HSC-14, to “move forward” while executing a basic approach as part of a graded evolution for the LSE certification process at Naval Outlying Landing Field in Imperial Beach, California, Oct. 14. During the evolution, HSC-3 instructors guided LSE students in implementing proper hand signaling techniques and protocol used to communicate with helicopter pilots and other ground personnel during flight deck operations such as basic approach and vertical replenishment. The “Merlins” of HSC-3, stationed on Naval Air Station, North Island in Coronado, California, serve as the course curriculum model manager for the schoolhouse, and train all Pacific Fleet Helicopter Control Officers and LSEs.
