211014-N-EV253-2188 SAN DIEGO (Oct. 14, 2021) – A student (front) enrolled in the Landing Signalman Enlisted (LSE) course signals to the hook up person and the crew of an MH-60S Knighthawk helicopter, assigned to the “Chargers” of HSC-14, to “hook up load” during a vertical replenishment simulation and graded evolution for the LSE certification process at Naval Outlying Landing Field in Imperial Beach, California, Oct. 14. During the evolution, HSC-3 instructors guided LSE students in implementing proper hand signaling techniques and protocol used to communicate with helicopter pilots and other ground personnel during flight deck operations such as basic approach and vertical replenishment. The “Merlins” of HSC-3, stationed on Naval Air Station, North Island in Coronado, California, serve as the curriculum model manager for the course, and train all Pacific Fleet Helicopter Control Officers and LSEs.
