211014-N-EV253-1947 SAN DIEGO (Oct. 14, 2021) – Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Handler) 1st Class Brandi Fleming (left), from Rancho Cucamonga, and assigned to the “Merlins” of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 3 as an instructor for the Landing Signalman Enlisted (LSE) course, prepares her student, Airman Recruit Trenton Davidson, from Texarkana, Texas, and assigned to the “Raptors” of Helicopter Maritime Strike Squadron (HSM) 71, to approach an aircraft during a graded evolution at Naval Outlying Landing Field in Imperial Beach, California, Oct. 14. During the evolution, HSC-3 instructors guided LSE students in implementing proper hand signaling techniques and protocol used to communicate with helicopter pilots and other ground personnel during flight deck operations such as basic approach and vertical replenishment. The “Merlins” of HSC-3, stationed on Naval Air Station, North Island in Coronado, California, serve as the course curriculum model manager for the schoolhouse, and train all Pacific Fleet Helicopter Control Officers and LSEs.
