211014-N-EV253-1115 SAN DIEGO (Oct. 14, 2021) – Aviation Boatswain’s Mate (Handler) 2nd Class Marricco Roberts (right), from Atlanta, Georgia, and assigned to the “Merlins” of Helicopter Sea Combat Squadron (HSC) 3 as an instructor for the Landing Signalman Enlisted (LSE) course, supervises a student who checks the air space in the flight path of an MH-60S Knighthawk helicopter, assigned to the “Chargers” of HSC-14, ensuring it is free of obstacles during a graded evolution for the LSE course at Naval Outlying Landing Field in Imperial Beach, California, Oct. 14. During the evolution, Sailors enrolled in the course were led by a team of instructors from HSC-3, the course curriculum model manager, and learned proper hand signaling techniques used to communicate with helicopter pilots and other ground personnel during flight deck evolutions such as basic approach and vertical replenishment. HSC-3, stationed on Naval Air Station, North Island in Coronado, California, operates the MH-60S Knighthawk helicopter, and trains all Pacific Fleet Helicopter Control Officers and LSEs.
