U.S. AIR FORCE ACADEMY, Colo. – Air Force World Class Athlete Program’s Maj. Phalen French warms up during modern pentathlon training. As a modern pentathlete, French is currently training in four other events – pistol shooting, swimming, horse riding and running – in hopes of securing a spot to compete in the 2024 Summer Olympic Games in Paris. Established in 1995, Air Force WCAP, managed by the Air Force Services Center, continues the legacy of Tuskegee Airman Malvin G. Whitfield. Whitfield, a Korean War tail gunner, became the first active-duty American service member to win Olympic gold in 1952 in Helsinki. (U.S. Air Force photo by Craig Z. Rodarte)
