Capt. Kyle Meariman, Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA), and Nguyen Hong Trung, Vietnam Office for Seeking Missing Persons (VNOSMP), participate in a ceremony before removing the first shovels of soil during a DPAA recovery mission, Nghệ An Province, Socialist Republic of Vietnam, Feb. 26, 2023. There are currently 81,500 personnel are missing in action from United States conflicts, with 1,581 of those still missing from the Vietnam War. The mission of the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency is to provide the fullest possible accounting for our missing personnel from past conflicts to their families and the nation. Since 1973, the remains of more than 1,000 Americans killed during the Vietnam War have been identified and returned to their families for burial with full military honors.
