From left, U.S. Air Force Tech. Sgt. Phillip Felton, Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency explosives ordnance disposal specialist watches U.S. Navy Electronics Technician 1st Class Zachary McDonald, DPAA recovery team augmentee, screen soil at a wet screening station during a DPAA recovery mission, Nghệ An Province, Socialist Republic of Vietnam, March 1, 2023. The DPAA considers that "fullest possible accounting" is achieved when all practicable investigations and reasonable recovery efforts are complete; and based upon the evidence gleaned from such efforts, an analytic and scientific conclusion is reached that a person's remains are deemed “non-recoverable". Since 1973, the remains of more than 1,000 Americans killed during the Vietnam War have been identified and returned to their families for burial with full military honors. The DPAA tirelessly continues the search for the remaining 1,241 missing in action service members in order to provide fullest possible accounting for our missing and unaccounted-for U.S. personnel to their families and the nation.
