Dale Maratas, Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) life support investigator, screens soil at a wet screening station during a DPAA recovery mission, Nghệ An Province, Socialist Republic of Vietnam, March 1, 2023. Each recovery team consists of 10-14 people comprised of a forensic anthropologist, team leader and sergeant, linguist, medic, life support technician, communications technician, forensic photographer, explosive ordnance disposal technician, and mortuary affairs specialists. Recovery teams use standard field archaeology methods in the excavation as directed by the on-site anthropologist. Since 1973, the remains of more than 1,000 Americans killed during the Vietnam War have been identified and returned to their families for burial with full military honors. The DPAA tirelessly continues the search for the remaining 1,241 missing in action service members in order to provide fullest possible accounting for our missing and unaccounted-for U.S. personnel to their families and the nation.
