Soldiers and townspeople take to the dance floor in Sitka’s Harrigan Centennial Hall Oct. 17, 2023, for the annual Alaska Day Ball. The 11th Airborne Division Band performed during the ball as part of the annual Alaska Day festival activities. The festival marks the ceremony which occurred on October 18, 1867, on Castle Hill in Sitka, transferring the territory from Russia to the United States. Annual celebrations include a reenactment ceremony, a period costume ball, dances, concerts, a wreath-laying ceremony in the Sitka National Cemetery and a parade through town.
