U.S. Army Alejandro Calvin, a human resources non-commissioned officer, assigned to 1st Cavalry Division Sustainment Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, participates in the Division's recognition of Native American soldiers during Native American Heritage Month, Fort Cavazos, Texas on November 7, 2023. Calvin shares heritage with the Opata tribe, an indigenous community originating from the northeast and central part of Sonora, Mexico and they currently reside primarily in the southwestern region of the United States such as Arizona.
“I enjoy being recognized, because it allows a lot of Native American youth to see that it is being respected and honored,” Calvin said. “They can be proud to be Native American and own that sovereignty and claim their identity as well.”
Native American Heritage Month provides the Army an opportunity to recognize and express appreciation for the contributions of Native American Soldiers, veterans, civilians, and family members and to reflect on their achievements and contributions to the Army and to our nation.
