Spc. Carson Jumping Eagle, a combat medic specialist, assigned to 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, stands in front of the 1st CAV Patch in recognition of Native American soldiers during Native American Heritage Month, Fort Cavazos, Texas on November 7, 2023. Jumping Eagle shares heritage with the Oglala Lakota and the Ho-Chunk tribe. The Lakota people predominantly reside between North and South Dakota, and the Ho-Chunk tribe reside near parts of Wisconsin.
“It’s important to recognize the things that have happened,” Jumping Eagle said. “But at the same time, it’s important to recognize we are still here.”
Native American Heritage Month provides the Army an opportunity to recognize and express appreciation for the contributions of Native American Soldiers, veterans, civilians, and family members and to reflect on their achievements and contributions to the Army and to our nation.
