U.S. Army Specialist Madison Maxfield, a CH-47 “Chinook” helicopter repairer, assigned to 2nd Battalion, 227th Aviation Regiment, 1st Air Cavalry Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, participates in the Division’s recognition of Native American soldiers during Native American Heritage Month, Fort Cavazos, Texas on November 7, 2023. Maxfield shares heritage with both the Potawatomi and Mik’maq tribes who predominantly reside along the upper Mississippi River and western Great Lakes region of the United States.
“One of the best things about being in aviation in the Army is that our helicopters are named after tribes,” Maxfield said. “It is held in high regard and there is a ceremony made when they name them, and the ceremony is done with the people of that tribe. When I found that out, it gave me a lot more pride and a sense of respect for the job itself.”
Native American Heritage Month provides the Army an opportunity to recognize and express appreciation for the contributions of Native American Soldiers, veterans, civilians, and family members and to reflect on their achievements and contributions to the Army and to our nation.
