U.S. Army Sgt. Zackery Sebwenna, an AH-64 “Apache” attack helicopter repairer, assigned to 7th Squadron, 17th Cavalry Regiment, 1st Air Cavalry Brigade, 1st Cavalry Division, participates in the Division’s recognition of Native American soldiers during Native American Heritage Month, Fort Cavazos, Texas on November 7, 2023. Sebwenna shares heritage with the Inuit people, particularly from the King Island region of Alaska. The Inuit people are one of several communities who are indigenous to subarctic regions such as northern Canada, parts of Greenland, and Alaska.
“The Inuit community is very caring and loving,” Sebwenna said. “They are a tight-knit community up there and we do walrus hunting, crab-fishing, and also have the Eskimo Olympics.”
Native American Heritage Month provides the Army an opportunity to recognize and express appreciation for the contributions of Native American Soldiers, veterans, civilians, and family members and to reflect on their achievements and contributions to the Army and to our nation.
