U.S. Air Force Maj. Steve “Waldo” Alsen displays his squadron’s signature “buzzard claw” gesture after arriving in his F-16C Fighting Falcon at Naval Base Ventura County Point Mugu in California to participate in exercise Bamboo Eagle on Jan. 26. Alsen is a pilot with the 510th Fighter Squadron based at Aviano Air Base in Italy. The squadron’s nickname is the Buzzards, and its pilots often use the buzzard claw gesture in a show of esprit de corps. This is the first iteration of Bamboo Eagle, which is a U.S. Air Force Warfare Center live-fly, multidomain combat readiness exercise. Bamboo Eagle includes more than 150 aircraft operating from over 10 locations across the West Coast, flying training missions over the Pacific Ocean. (U.S. Navy photo by Eric Parsons/Released)
