    Staff Sgt. Jacob Allen Sawyer is the 173rd Infantry Brigade Combat Team (Airborne)’s Public Affairs NCOIC. He won 1st place in the 173rd Brigades' writing competition for Non-Commissioned Officers. He has four Unit Public Affairs Representatives that he leads; two of which have been recognized across the Department of Defense many times. Staff Sgt. Jacob Allen Sawyer joined the United States Army September 10, 1999 as an Avenger Crewmember (14S). After completing basic training and AIT, he went on to complete Airborne School at Ft. Benning, Georgia. Upon completing Airborne school, Staff Sgt. Sawyer went on to his first duty station at Charlie Battery, 1st Battalion, 4th Battery Air Defense Artillery, Ft. Riley, Kansas where he served two years honorably. He then PCS’d to Bravo Battery, 5th Battalion, 5th Brigade Air Defense Artillery at Camp Hovey, Korea. He served a year in Korea as 5/5 ADA’s sole unit armorer, responsible for 1.2 million dollars worth of equipment; after which he completed his contract and left the Army in 2003. He was out and taking college courses to earn an Associates Degree in Fire Science Technology for two years when he received a letter in the mail recalling him for the war in Iraq in 2005. Staff Sgt. Sawyer went through re-introduction to the Army for two weeks, re-trained as a truck driver (88M) for 8 weeks, convoy training at Ft. Bliss El Paso for two weeks and then shipped off to Iraq and a National Guard unit from New Mexico, 1116th Transportation Company. While with 1116th Trans, he served as team chief and assistant convoy commander. After completing a year in Iraq, wracking up 1.2 million miles as a company and making it an entire year with out 1 improvised explosive device incident, Staff Sgt. Sawyer ETS’d again in 2006. Three years later after completing a technical certification for Diesel / Industrial Engines at the Universal Technical Institute, Houston, Texas; Staff Sgt. Sawyer re-joined the Army as an 88M and went off to Korea, again in 2009. He spent the year at 70th Support Battalion, Alpha Forward Support Company in the Distribution Platoon as a Section Sergeant. After completing his year in Korea, he then PCS’d to Ft. Campbell, Kentucky with 594th Transportation Company. There he completed Air Assault school and deployed to Afghanistan for a year. He had the opportunity on the deployment to act as the units Liaison Officer (LNO) in Kandahar, Afghanistan. While in Afghanistan, Staff Sgt. Sawyer re-enlisted for the 46 series MOS. Upon returning from deployment he shipped off to Defense Information School for his training. Ever since, Staff Sgt. Sawyer has served as a 46 series Soldier and many different locations such as the Joint Multinational Readiness Center from 2013-2016, 5th Special Forces Group 2016-2019 and now the 173rd IBCT (A). Staff Sgt. Sawyer has his beautiful wife: Danielle Sawyer and 4 crazy lovable kids: Brooklyn, Kynleigh, Candler and Maribeth.
