Drill instructor students practice using their noncommissioned officers swords Jan. 22, 2014, at Drill Instructor School on Parris Island, S.C. Throughout the arduous upcoming weeks, these noncommissioned and staff noncommissioned officers will train every day for a chance to earn the legendary “Smokey Bear” cover and the title of drill instructor, one only claimed by the top 10 percent of the Marine Corps. The Drill Instructor School on Parris Island and its counterpart in San Diego are responsible for training all future drill instructors in an intensive 11-week course.
