Sgt. Curtis Evans, a student at Drill Instructor School on Parris Island, S.C., practices projecting his voice to command a platoon of recruits Jan. 15, 2014. Marines such as Evans, a 28-year-old native of King, N.C., train for 11 weeks, becoming proficient in all areas of recruit training knowing that every move they make will set the example for recruits. The Drill Instructor School on Parris Island and its counterpart in San Diego are responsible for training all future drill instructors.
