Gunnery Sgt. Melanie Contreni, a Drill Instructor School instructor, teaches her students how to overcome challenges with recruits Jan. 15, 2014, during a class on Parris Island, S.C. Contreni, a 33-year-old native of Stamford, N.Y., is one of a handful of Marines charged with the responsibility of molding and shaping their peers into the next Marine Corps drill instructors. The Drill Instructor School on Parris Island and its counterpart in San Diego are responsible for training all future drill instructors in an intensive 11-week course.
