Maj. Mickey G. Moppin, doctor of veterinary medicine, injects a sedative into the hindquarter of "Don" prior to X-rays, April 24. Don, a military working dog assigned to Combined Joint Task Force - Horn of Africa, Camp Lemonier, Djibouti, required X-rays to uncover the cause of an upper respiratory problem. Don and his handler, Petty Officer Second Class Kellyann Stietzel, a master at arms, are used for explosive, narcotic detection as well as security patrols. The service members of CJTF-HOA, headquartered in Djibouti, employ an indirect approach to counter violent extremism. Through a strategy of cooperative conflict prevention, the task force helps build the internal capacities of countries at risk in order to prevail against extremists exploiting instability.
