A landing craft, air cushion (LCAC) approaches the amphibious transport dock ship USS Mesa Verde (LPD 19) to deliver food, first aid, and medical supplies. Mesa Verde is underway in preparation to support humanitarian assistance and disaster relief efforts in Haiti in response to Hurricane Matthew. JTF Matthew was a U.S. Southern Command lead humanitarian assistance, disaster relief effort in Haiti following Hurricane Matthew. Matthew was a category 4 hurricane that formed in the Western Atlantic Ocean and affected Haiti, eastern Cuba, and the Bahamas before moving up the southeast coast of the United States.
