Spc. Nicholas Ketchum, a mechanic with Company B, 15th Forward Support Battalion, helps Spc. Carl Ford, a tanker with Headquarters Company, 2nd Battalion, 12th Cavalry Regiment, repair a .50 caliber machine gun mounted atop an M1114 up-armored Humvee outside Camp Dogwood in the Latifiyah area along the Euphrates River in North Babil Jan. 3. Mechanics, fuel handlers and other support personnel were staged outside the camp during Operation River Walk Jan. 2 and 3. The 36-hour cordon and search operation involved the entire Task Force 2-12 Cav. in conjunction with 2nd Battalion, 24th Marine Regiment to deny anti-Iraqi forces sanctuary and to provide security for the upcoming Iraqi free elections later this month. Operation River Walk ended with the discovery of nine significant weapons caches, the detainment of 43 suspected anti-Iraqi insurgents and the discovery and destruction of several improvised explosive devices.
