Sgt. Samuel Mateo, Headquarters Company, 1st Battalion, 9th Cavalry Regiment, 3rd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, leads the officers and noncommissioned officers of the 302nd Iraqi Regular Army Battalion in warm-up stretches prior to a physical fitness test Jan. 9. The Iraqi Soldiers were present at Forward Operating Base Independence in central Baghdad for the beginning of a five-day leadership development course. During the course, the Iraqi troops learn about leadership responsibilities, counseling soldiers, basic movement skills, basic and advanced rifle skills general troop leading procedures, and mission planning skills.
